Known as The Test of the Champion for its extreme distance, tough track and for some horses being the third Grade 1 race contested in just five weeks, the Belmont Stakes is the traditional third leg of the Triple Crown and this Saturday, June 8, we get to see the 151st renewal of this great race.

A total of 10 runners will go to post in New York and while owners, trainers and jockeys are all vying for a share of the cool $1.5million prize money on offer, for us it’s all about being able to successfully bet the Belmont Stakes and share in the delight of grabbing a winner.

More than 90,000 people are expected to be in attendance at Belmont Park and they, along with the millions betting online and watching at home, form the fiercely competitive wagering market which amounts to a total handle of around $130 million.

Where to Bet the Belmont Stakes

Despite those millions bet right there at the track, most of the dollars wagered on this race will be done so online this year and here at TVG we have you covered. You can bet the race with us and enjoy the whole occasion right there at home.

How to Bet the Belmont Stakes

When the final field and gate positions are known for the race on June 8 you will find you have an array of betting options available to you. Here are just some of the wager types you can play around with after you’ve made your final Belmont Stakes selections:

The most popular and simple bet of them all; bet your horse to win and it must come first in order for you to be paid and in this race even this bet can amount to some pretty big returns.

Ideal for those looking to bet just one horse but play a little safe; wagering your horse to ‘place’ means it must finish in the first two. Payoffs are a little lower than on ‘win’ bets of course, but many long shots do well in the Belmont and lots of place bets pay big dividends.

Once again only one horse is needed and this time it must only finish in the first three for you to be paid, though returns are often quite low.

If you like more than one horse in this year’s Belmont Stakes betting then you could try an Exacta. Your nominated horses must finish first and second in the correct order for you to win with last year’s Exacta paying $89.00 on Justify and Gronkowski.

If you’re feeling even more exotic you can pick three horses to form a Trifecta but they must finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the right order for you to score. Last year’s payout was $229.74.

Bet the Belmont Stakes big or not at all, right? This time four horses are needed and again they must finish 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the correct order. Payoffs are huge on this one but wins are rare.

Remember that on all multiple bets you can choose to ‘box’ your horses, i.e. boxing an Exacta means you pay more but your horses can finish first and second in either order giving you a better chance at a win.
