This year there are several opportunities to pick winner as there are every year. I have started studying the different form lines This year there are several opportunities to pick winner as there are every year. I have started studying the different.

Below I will highlight one of my strongest selections for the Friday night in the Dirt Mile.

The Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile is always an open affair that is ultra-competitive. This year is no different. I look to this as an opportunity for us to find some value in what will be a tight market.

Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Leading Contenders as of 09/13/2017:

  1. Mor Spirit’s performance in the Met Mile in Belmont was phenomenal. One would have to be quietly concerned regarding the long lay-off amidst that he may not be working as well as liked but Bob Baffert is a master trainer who could have him right for the day.
  2. Practical Joke was the winner of the H. Allen Jerkens on the 26th August at Saratoga. I was impressed by this performance on the back of a good run in the Haskell where he was a little keen and arguably the best horse in the race. It is disappointing to see the form of the Haskell hasn’t worked out too well. While I think a strong run mile would suit him, if I was the owners I would be considering the Breeders' Cup Sprint as well.
  3. Battle Of Midway is coming off an easy stakes win in Del Mar in his most recent start where he came 6L clear. He has come up short at the top level on his three attempts but deserves his place in the lineup. The mile trip may suit him more than the 1 ¼ miles. If we look back to his Kentucky Derby run he was right there at the mile pole.
  4. Sharp Azteca was beaten 6L by Mor Spirit in the Met Mile and it is hard to see him turning around that form.
  5. Accelerate was third in this race last year when it was staged at Santa Anita. He has been a model of consistency without getting his head in front in a Grade 1 and ran well over a distance probably too far in the TVG Pacific Classic on his last start only beaten 4L. A drop back to a mile and he could be a player in this.

My Pick: Accelerate

Horse Name Odds
Mor Spirit 6/4
Practical Joke 1/1
Battle Of Midway 6/1
Sharp Azteca 7/1
Accelerate 8/1
