2023 Breeders’ Cup Contenders

2023 Breeders' Cup

By TVG Staff
Updated November 3, 2023

The Breeders’ Cup World Championships happen for the 40th time on November 3 and 4. The mountainside Santa Anita Park is hosting the event for the 11th time. The festival features five championship races for juveniles on Friday and nine more for older horses on Saturday, meaning 14 exciting races. All of them feature deep fields of the world’s top horses, ready for some fast races, exciting finishes, and the greatest horse racing moments of the year!

It isn’t just owners, trainers, and jockeys who look forward to these races. Anyone who bets on horse racing looks forward to Breeders’ Cup betting since all of the races have such deep, classy fields. With horses of all ages, a large range of distances, and races on both dirt and turf, everyone will find a great opportunity for wagering value.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Contenders

Thousands of horses have tried to qualify, and it’s important for breeders, owners, trainers, and Breeders’ Cup bettors to know what conditions each confirmed runner can handle.

With up to just 14 starters allowed in the gate, connections are choosy about who they send to run for their share of the $30 million bounty. You, too, should be fussy when it comes to picking out your Breeders’ Cup bets for each of the races.

As the official wagering partner of the Breeders’ Cup, we at TVG know that having the right betting information is important. When you bet on Breeders’ Cup races online or at the track, remember that the odds will fluctuate until post-time. Your best course of action is to learn about the contenders now; that way, you’ll be able to look at the tote board with an educated eye. Then, once the race day comes, you can be ready to track the odds and find your Breeders’ Cup betting overlays.

This is the official lineup for the 2023 Breeders’ Cup after the draw and assignment of morning-line odds on Monday, October 30.

Breeders’ Cup Classic Contenders

As always, the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic will be the focal point of bets for a lot of players. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is run over 1¼ miles, is for horses aged three and up, and will go a long way to crowning 2023’s Horse of the Year. The betting leader is expected to be Pacific Classic winner Arabian Knight, while the later-blooming Saudi Crown should also take some attention. The older White Abarrio burst onto the Breeders’ Cup Classic scene after winning the Whitney. Though he missed a work on October 23, he worked back later in the week and appears in good form. Proxy has been a constant presence in top dirt races, and top Japan-based runner and Dubai World Cup winner Ushba Tesoro will make his first trip stateside.

Breeders’ Cup Classic Contenders

The Breeders’ Cup Classic drew a field of 13, though at most 12 will run after Arcangelo scratched and was retired Tuesday morning. These are the runners, along with post positions, jockeys, trainers, owners, and morning-line odds.

Breeders' Cup Turf Contenders

This race always brings the best of the world’s turf horses against the best American and Canadian horses, and overseas horses have dominated this 1 ½-mile grass race in recent years. Juddmonte International winner Mostahdaf has been named the morning-line favorite; he defected from the British Champion Stakes (G1) due to the soft ground and instead rerouted to this. Dual Derby winner Auguste Rodin has found top form again for trainer Aidan O’Brien, and their leading overseas foes include British Champion winner King of Steel and Arc de Triomphe (G1) third-place finisher Onesto. Tops among the American hopes include the rapidly improving Up to the Mark as well as War Like Goddess, who finished third in the Turf in 2022.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Contenders

13 horses originally entered the Breeders’ Cup Turf, though Get Smokin was withdrawn on Tuesday evening, so at most 12 are expected to run. This is the field with post positions, jockeys, trainers, owners, and morning-line odds.

Breeders’ Cup Mile Contenders

The Breeders’ Cup Turf covers a mile on the grass. With turf miles being one of the prestige divisions abroad, contenders from Europe typically do well in this race, though there are strong contenders from all over the world this year. Morning-line favorite Songline is the leading turf miler in Japan. Even after leading European miler Paddington was retired Friday, the race will still feature strong overseas contenders like Master of the Seas, and Mawj, both of whom are already proven to ship well to North America. Leading North America-based contenders include Saratoga star Casa Creed, Gina Romantica, and Shirl’s Speight.

Breeders’ Cup Mile Contenders

The Breeders’ Cup Mile drew a full field of fourteen, with thirteen expected to start after the Thursday-afternoon defection of Exaulted. These are the runners, including their post positions, jockeys, trainers, owners, and morning-line odds.

Breeders’ Cup Sprint Contenders

A six-furlong dash on the dirt: blink and you miss this six-furlong race! American speed merchants perennially take center stage, and 2023 is expected to be no different. Elite Power won the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and looks well spotted to win again on the turn back to six furlongs. He will face his old foe Gunite. West-coast foes who seek to topple this formidable east-coast pair include Speed Boat Beach, The Chosen Vron, and Dr. Schivel.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Contenders

Once won by the amazing Zenyatta, this 1 1/8-mile race brings together some of the best fillies and mares on the dirt. With the retirement of Secret Oath and the defection of Nest, the in-form Idiomatic shapes as not only the frontrunner but also the heavy favorite. Clairiere has been beaten less than a length in the last two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Kentucky Oaks winner Pretty Mischievous will be a leading contender, as will improving sophomore Randomized, West Coast leader Adare Manor, and hard-trying Search Results.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Contenders

While the queens of the dirt compete in the Distaff, the matriarchs of the turf go over 1¼ miles in this race. Horses based outside North America have dominated the winners’ circle in recent years and look strong once again. The favorite will likely be either Inspiral or Warm Heart, as both carry streaks of two-straight overseas Group 1 wins into the Breeders’ Cup; the morning line landed on Inspiral, but make sure to watch both on the tote. Other leading overseas hopes include Lumiere Rock and Win Marilyn, while the most important contenders based in North America include Didia, In Italian, and top Canadian turf filly Moira.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Contenders

Middle-distance dirt specialists shine in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, which will be run over a two-turn configuration at Santa Anita. Cody’s Wish won the 2022 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, and he will be a heavy favorite to repeat. West-coast fixture Senor Buscador and extended one-turn specialist Zozos are others who will try to topple the champ in this one-mile race. Stage Raider, relegated to the reserve list at the time of pre-entries, got enough defections to draw into the field and interests at a long price.

Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Contenders

After the unfortunate injury to Echo Zulu, Goodnight Olive looks like a heavy favorite to repeat in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, a seven-furlong race. Yuugiri comes into the race in sharp form after a win at Keeneland, and Matareya will try to recapture the form that saw her beat Goodnight Olive earlier in the season. California locals worth a look include Clearly Unhinged, Eda, Kirstenbosch, and Desert Dawn.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Contenders

Especially after the recent rebuilding of the turf sprint division in the United States, the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint has become one of the most exciting, wide-open, and classy races of the entire festival. It is a grass race in which stateside runners and international shippers have been able to shine. Defending champion Caravel is speedy but far from a lock. Other stateside contenders include the likes of Nobals, Motorious, and Tony Ann, who recently conquered her at Keeneland. They will have to face tough overseas sprinters like possible favorites Live in the Dream and Bradsell.

Bradsell was scratched Thursday morning, opening up a spot for an also-eligible to draw in. One Timer, the original first also-eligible, was also declared out. Beer Can Man is expected to start in Bradsell’s stead. Twilight Gleaming defected from the also-eligible list on Thursday, though she would have had last priority no matter what.

TVG Juvenile Contenders

Often the stepping stone to great things, this race will most likely produce both the juvenile champion as well as the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby next May. As usual, trainer Bob Baffert will be sending out two horses who are likely to be among the favorites: Prince of Monaco and Muth. Locked is the most proven of the eastern set so far, and has been named the morning-line favorite narrowly, though The Wine Steward made him work for it at Keeneland. Timberlake has shown a lot of talent so far, but still has to prove himself at two turns.

Juvenile Turf Contenders

This is a one-mile turf race in which European shippers and North America-based horses tend to trade blows at the top, making it an exciting betting opportunity. The favorite should unquestionably be Unquestionable, an Aidan O’Brien trainee who has kept top-class company overseas. Major North American hopes—all of whom have won automatic Breeders’ Cup qualifiers—include Agate Road, Can Group, and Carson’s Run. Tok Tok is another improving American who is worth a look at a price.

These horses drew into the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. They are presented in order of post position, along with their jockeys, trainers, owners, and morning-line odds. The winner of this race gets the catbird seat for the two-year-old filly championship, and also becomes an early favorite for the 2023 Kentucky Oaks. The heavy favorite will be Tamara: daughter of 2012 winner Beholder, and an impressive Grade 1 winner in her own right. Candied, Chatalas, and Just F Y I are Breeders’ Cup prep race winners who are coming into good form at the right time, and V V’s Dream has experience, as she has been running against good horses and never been out of the exacta in four starts.

Juvenile Turf Sprint Contenders

The newest of the Breeders’ Cup races, horses based in the United States won the first four editions of this but Charlie Appleby’s Mischief Magic scored the first blow for international contenders in 2022. The betting board should be wide open in 2023. Big Evs may be a favorite off of wins in the Flying Childers and the Windsor Castle, though other top overseas hopes include Valiant Force, Givemethebeatboys. Winning Royal Ascot raider Crimson Advocate leads the American contingent, with No Nay Mets and Committee of One also strong. With some defections after pre-entries, Amidst Waves has gotten in as well, and this rising star may be the best of the trio from the George Weaver barn. Shards is another from the Indian Summer Stakes, like Amidst Waves, who got into the main field; he looks live underneath.
