August 24, 2019 sees the 150th running of the Travers Stakes at Saratoga and it promises to be a very special race. Known affectionately as the “Mid-Summer Derby”, this event is only for sophomores and is a “win and you’re in” race for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Ranked only behind the Triple Crown races as far as 3-year-old only contests go, the Travers comes with a purse of $1.25million and has been won by some of the most famous names in the sport.

How Horses Qualify for the Travers Stakes

As mentioned above the Tavers race is only for 3-year-olds with colts and geldings to carry 126lbs and the fillies 121lbs. While Saratoga aims to attract the best possible horses each year, there is no fixed qualifying criteria in terms of money earned or points gained on a leader board.

This race is all about quality with fields of around a dozen horses, often even under ten in fact, competing but all having proven themselves to be Grade 1 runners.

The Travers is run over 1¼ miles, the same distance as the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic, so only thoroughbreds bred for this kind of test are seriously considered for the race by owners and trainers alike.

Bet on the Travers Stakes

Tavers stakes betting is simple with the following guidelines and tips. If you prefer you can stick with a straight bet, these being:

  • WIN – Your chosen horse must win the Travers outright for you to be paid.
  • PLACE – This time your pick must finish in the first two runners.
  • SHOW – Your chosen horse must finish in the first three to payoff.

When betting on the Pari Mutuel system your payoff will depend on the overall handle, divided by how many bets are placed on your horse. Because of this, the highest payout will be on ‘win’ bets, the second-highest on ‘place’ bets and the lowest on ‘show’.

You can choose a more exotic Travers bet if you wish, wagering on an Exacta. Making this bet means picking two horses who must then finish first and second in the correct order for your bet to payoff.

You can also box this bet. Boxing the bet means you pay double, but it doesn’t matter in which order your two horses finish so long as they are first and second past the wire.

Going for an even bigger payday you could bet a Trifecta. The rules are the similar as above, except this time you’re picking three horses to finish 1-2-3 in the exact order. Once again you can pay to box the bet so that your horses can finish in any order, as long as they are the first three at the line.

Placing Your Travers Stakes Bets

Saratoga’s summer meet is something special but the truth is that the vast majority of us cannot make it to New York, but don’t worry. You can place your bet right here online with TVG!

Travers Stakes History

The race was inaugurated as far back as 1864 and named for the president of the previous Saratoga Racing Association, William R. Travers with runners fighting for the Travers Trophy saratoga race, known otherwise as the Man O’War Cup which was designed by Tiffany & Co.

Although run over various lengths between 1864 and 1904, the current 1¼-mile distance is thought of as perfect for contemporary 3-year-olds and means the race, run in August every year, sits perfectly between the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Great winners of the Travers have included Man o’ War and Whirlaway while in recent times modern day greats such as Street Sence, Arrogate and the all-conquering Grand Slam hero American Pharoah have taken this race to great acclaim.

Saratoga’s Summer Meet

Saratoga boasts plenty of facilities; training tracks, two turf courses and the main dirt track on which the Travers is staged. The facility can hold over 50,000 people for race days with its legendary summer meet taking place over 40 days from the middle of July right through Labor Day, all available on TVG.

The Tavers meet is filled with top-level events including no less than 15 Grade 1 races of which the Travers Stakes is only one. Travers Day also features the Sword Dancer Stakes, Personal Ensign Stakes, Forego Handicap, Ballerina Handicap and the H. Allen Jerkens Memorial all at Grade 1 level.
