Assiniboia Downs Race Track

In June 1958, the Assiniboia Downs Race Track opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. But like all businesses, it has seen its ups and downs. With the advent of wide spread gaming casinos over the past two decades, the entire industry waned. Assiniboia with it. By 1993, bankruptcy was imminent and the future of racing in the region was bleak. That same year, however, the Assiniboia Downs Race Track passed from private ownership to become a non-profit corporation. The track`s fortunes started to climb under the leadership of Harvey Warner, a local businessman, and a dedicated board of directors.

Today, the Manitoba Jockey Club continues to operate the Assiniboia Downs Racetrack as a non-profit organization. Though the racing calendar has been cut short – live horse racing is only held during the summer on the main track – the year-round simulcast broadcasts and warm hospitality of the staff keep players, fans, and tourists coming in droves. The facilities include a souvenir center, two restaurants, and 100 state-of-the-art VLTs for simulcast viewing.

Assiniboia Downs Racetrack has become a popular destination for a variety of conventions and family activities as well. It features a business area near the track, which can accommodate up to 800 people for meetings and trade shows. And on Sundays children of all ages can visit to enjoy pony rides, a petting zoo, crafts, and face painting.
