About Buffalo Raceway

Buffalo Raceway is situated on the Erie County Fairgrounds site in Hamburg, New York, just 12 miles from Buffalo, 35 miles from Niagara Falls and a short drive from Lake Erie.

As well as live racing, a full simulcast service is offered across many screens on site and of course the signal from this track allows wagering on Buffalo Raceway all across the land.

The track is still seen as one of the best harness racing venues in North America, a moniker they are extremely proud of and rightly so.

Buffalo Raceway History

Buffalo Raceway opened up to the public back in summer 1942 almost immediately after New York State passed a bill allowing pari-mutuel harness racing.

Buffalo has always been a busy track, hosting 70 race meetings per year even as far back as the 1940’s. Growth continued into the 50’s and by the 1960’s the track was considered one of the top ten in the country for harness racing.

Although the raceway is still going strong today, it was back in 1966 that the all-time record attendance was set at Buffalo when just under 13,000 turned up on July 15 for a big summer meet.

During this era the track was sold and new surface was constructed, made of stone dust which allowed for winter racing.

When in the 1970’s off-track betting was allowed Buffalo ensured they would not fall behind and introduced such facilities which, although seen as a plus in terms of revenue, led to a decline in attendances at the track itself hence the attendance record having stood since the 60’s.

There was another change of ownership in 1990 when Erie County Agricultural Society bought the facility, intending fully to intensify the program to keep the track as a quality harness racing venue.

Given the need for almost all US tracks to become racinos in order to look after income, Fairgrounds Gaming opened here in 2004 with over 900 gaming machines.

Following improvements year on year to the facilities for horsemen, the completion of the backstretch occurred in 2013 with more barns built and a new video system installed as well as improvements to track lighting.

More improvements to existing barns and infrastructure took place in 2014 and by 2017 an upgrade to the Clubhouse saw new dining facilities made available to race goers.

Buffalo Raceway Track Details

Buffalo Raceway has a half-mile dirt oval, lit up for evening meets, but no turf track is required on the site.
