About Cal Expo

The California Exposition and State Fair Grounds (Cal Expo) is California’s only harness racing track and sits on around 356 acres just above the American River and close to downtown Sacramento. The track is surrounded by hotels and is less than a 25-minute drive from Sacramento International Airport.

As well as the quality harness racing on show during the season, Cal Expo still hosts the California State Fair on the current site every year in either August or September with thoroughbred, quarter horse and Arabian racing all taking place during the festivities.

Cal Expo History

The track was first built back in 1906, primarily for horse racing, on the site of the California Exposition. The exposition, known as Cal Expo, was setup to promote California’s farming and industry and lends its name to this track.

Auto racing also took place on the site in 1907, 1912 and again from 1946 to 1970 inclusive though horse racing was always its intended use as a track. The expo moved to downtown Sacramento in 1968 when the old California State Fairgrounds were closed. The new track has been in use since 1970 and remains a hugely popular visitor attraction in the city.
