Racing at Harrahs Philadelphia

Racing Dates

The track currently runs a 150-day live racing meet running from early April to mid-December. Race days usually take place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday as well as on major holidays (Saturdays and Mondays). Racing typically begins at 12.40PM each day.

About Harrah’s Philadelphia

Although a relative infant in the grand scheme of things, Harrah’s Philadelphia is already seen as one of the best places for harness racing anywhere in the States.

Already one of the fastest 5/8 mile horse racing surfaces around, a major draw is Harrah’s ‘miracle turn’ which extends over the Delaware River using a specially constructed bridge which offers views of passing freight ships.

Harrah’s Philadelphia looks to attract the very best pacers and trotters in North America, with live racing taking place from 12.40PM Wednesday through Friday and again on Sundays from March or April until December.

The track is located less than a half hour from downtown Philadelphia using the I-95 and about the same distance from Wilmington.

As well as live harness racing, simulcast racing is also made available at what is a typically modern ‘racino’ facility, bettors being able to wager on racing throughout the United States and Canada all year round.

The casino part of the facility boasts almost 3,000 slot machines in over 100,000 square feet of gaming space as well as a large event center.

The paddock at Harrah’s Philadelphia can hold over 130 horses but due to limited space on site, horses tend to be shipped in rather than stabled on track.

Harrah’s Philadelphia History

The track opened for business officially in September 2006 as Harrah’s Chester (named specifically for where it stands) for harness racing with live races currently taking place from April to December.

Having received its license, the site opened as a racino on January 22, 2007 and Harrah’s began offering live table games to the public in July 2010.

In May 2012, the owners decided to change the name of this facility to Harrah’s Philadelphia in order to appeal to a larger market, something which has been seen as a success.
