About Fraser Downs Race Track

The Fraser Downs Race Track is a “racino” – a track and casino in a single, all-inclusive location – in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. It opened in 1975 and offers fans live standardbred horse racing between September and May on a 5/8ths mile harness track with homestretch of 677 feet, a speed rating of 2:004, a clubhouse capacity of 7,000 people, and seating for 19,000 fans in the grandstands. The casino features a gaming floor with 420 slots machines, a simulcast area, a wide variety of food and beverage in ten restaurants, and state of the art audio-visual technology.

Jim H. Keeling Sr., a native sportsman credited for bringing modern harness racing to British Columbia more than 50 years ago, is considered the founder of Fraser Downs Race Track. It began with a trip in 1969 to help the Fraser Valley Fair Board promote a harness meet. The journey and the people he met along the way led to his ownership of Cloverdale Raceway.

After nearly 30 years of operation, Cloverdale Raceway underwent renovation and was renamed Fraser Downs Racetrack. Then in 2003, when British Columbia abandoned its policy of banning slot machines from horse racing tracks, Chuck Keeling, Jim Keeling Sr.’s grandson, spearheaded a process to receive proper licensing to operate the slots – a move he believed could help arrest the sports decline and revive the Fraser Downs Racetrack.

He was right. Today, the completely remodeled Fraser Downs Racetrack is thriving as a wholly owned subsidiary of Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC), a leading casino and gaming operator, as well as the largest community-based gaming management company in western Canada.
