Fresno Race Track History

Fresno Race Track history dates back to 1883, when the Fresno Fair Ground Association, a group of businessmen, farmers, and ranchers, raised $5,000 to buy 100 acres of land. The following year, and it held the first Big Fresno Fair, with a five-day horse racing meet for trotters serving as the primary attraction. The California Legislature banned parimutuel horse race betting in 1909, and horse racing ceased at Fresno Race Track the next year.
Horse racing returned to Fresno Race Track in 1935. In 1938, the facility replaced its grandstand, but horse racing shut down again during World War II when the U.S. Army used the grounds for training. The venue repaired its grandstand in 1946, and the horses returned to the track two years later. Simulcast horse race betting becoming part of the offer in the 1980s, and numerous improvements over the years, including the addition of more than 6,100 trees and infield grass in 2008, have made the track a favorite among remote bettors.
