About Mountaineer

The Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort to give it its full moniker, hosts thoroughbred racing in New Cumberland, WV but is well known for having started the trend of North American tracks becoming racinos as it was the first to be allowed slot machines at the facility.

Although the track does sit in West Virginia, its closest major city is actually Pittsburgh which is only 50 miles away and provides a lot of the spectators regularly visiting this track.

Mountaineer History

Having been the brainchild of a man whose family hailed from Waterford, Ireland, this track was originally named Waterford Downs and despite the company formed to build it having been incorporated back in 1937, construction didn’t begin until 1948 after World War II.

Waterford Downs was renamed Waterford Park and it finally hosted its first day of live racing action in May 1951 and continued under the stewardship of the Boyle family until it was sold on in 1969.

Having been sold again in 1987, the track became known as Mountaineer Park but once again the owners were to cash in as things improved and the facility was once again moved on, this time for $4 million cash as well as nearly $3 million in stock.

In 1994 Mountaineer became the first track in the country to be allowed to have slot machines at the facility making it the first Racino, something which has become common practice across the States as owners seek to bring in much needed revenue to increase purses on the track.

Mountaineer’s casino offering was boosted in 2007 when 50 casino table games were introduced just before Christmas and there are now well over 3,000 slot machines on offer.

Mountaineer Track Details

The main track is a standard one-mile dirt oval with an unusual curve on the front stretch. There is a seven-furlong turf track to the inside and ample housing for horses and horsemen.

Biggest Races

West Virginia Derby (Grade 2) – 9 furlongs, 3-year-olds ($750,000, August)

This is by far the biggest race on the calendar at Mountaineer and it has found a permanent home having previously been run at Tri-State Park in the 1920’s and Wheeling Downs in the late 50’s to early 60’s. Mountaineer (former Waterford) has hosted the Derby since 1963.

The Fall Stakes, Autumn Leaves Stakes and the Mountaineer Mile Handicap are also popular during the meet.
