Racing at Mahoning Valley

About Mahoning Valley

This track essentially runs a winter thoroughbred program with racing taking place October through April. However, the track facilities are open 365 days a year for visitors to enjoy live simulcast racing from around the country, allowing bets to be placed on tracks anywhere in the country.

The Clubhouse at Mahoning Valley offers various dining and drinking options as well as two main areas for wagering; the first floor and the Simulcast Teletheater up on the second floor.

The facilities for the horsemen at Mahoning Valley consist of 13 barns which together can stable almost 1,000 horses. Dorm areas are available for employees of trainers and owners with the building consisting of 84 rooms and a capacity of 168 people (based on two sharing a room).

The track sits just 7 miles from Youngstown, Ohio, 65 miles from Cleveland and 75 miles over the state line to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and is accessible from the I-80 and the I-76.

Mahoning Valley History

Another of America’s newest inventions, the Racino, Mahoning Valley Race Course opened for business as recently as September 17, 2014 following an 18-month construction project which produced the track, a grandstand and a gaming area with almost 1,000 lottery terminals.

The track was needed to replace Beulah Park in Columbus which closed for racing in May 2013. Racing began at Mahoning Valley on November 24, 2014 and now carries on October through April every year.

By the time Mahoning Valley raced for its second season it registered gains in both purses and wagering with the average daily purse being $76,000.

More was to come though and during the 2015-16 season purses were averaging more than $106,000. This is a figure which means the track can compete with both Thistledown near Cleveland and Mountaineer Race Track over in West Virginia.

As of now, Mahoning Valley has three marquee open stakes races including the $200,000 Steel Valley Sprint Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for the three-year-olds in November. That age and distance has a resonance here with the other two big races being the Mahoning Distaff, also in November, and the Austintown Filly Sprint Stakes which takes place in April, each over the same six furlong trip and for three-year-olds only.
