Live racing at Presque Isle Downs runs May through October, generally Sunday through Thursday with post time at 5.25PM. Around 90+ live days of racing are scheduled though the facility is open every day to show simulcast racing from all around North America.

About Presque Isle Downs

The track is located only 5 miles from downtown Erie, Pennsylvania close to the Presque Isle Bay. With Cleveland only 99 miles away and Buffalo 95, crowds are drawn from out of town on a regular basis during the race meet.

The attached casino houses over 1,700 slot machines and is open daily meaning strong year-round revenue which helps to boost purses on the track.

Presque Isle Downs History

Everything about Presque Isle Downs is recent and has been witness on TVG, the developers MTR Gaming having only broken ground on the project in October 2005 with a focus on using an “all-weather” track rather than a traditional dirt surface.

The track opened its doors on February 28, 2007 and encompassed the simulcast facility which was previously located four miles away at Peach Street – this was finalized in August ’07.

After a successful opening decade, Eldorado Resorts (having succeeded MTR Gaming) sold the track to Churchill Downs for a cool $179million, something which looks like a good investment.

Presque Isle Downs Track Details

The one-mile oval track is paved with Tapeta, a synthetic material containing fiber, rubber, sand and wax and is something which has been popular in England at places like Newcastle where it is now used for the final European prep race for the Kentucky Derby.

Presque Isle Downs was the first synthetic track in this region over a mile and the very first Tapeta track in the United States.
