About Remington Park

Remington Park is a casino and more importantly a horse racing venue placed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Situated next to the Oklahoma City Zoo and around 8 miles from the downtown area, the track is ideally placed. Remington has the distinction of being described as the first world class pari-mutuel race track in the state.

American quarter horse, Appaloosa and Paint horses all feature during the meet running March through June while the very valuable thoroughbred season gets going in the fall.

The track remains open on non-racing days for the purposes of simulcast racing, meaning bettors can wager on races from all around North America on a daily basis.

Remington Park History

With the need for a track in the area agreed in the 1980’s, shopping mall developer Edward J. DeBartolo set about building Remington Park which opened its doors to the public on the 1st of September, 1988.

In its very first season in existence, Remington averaged a daily handle of $1.1million and attendance figures of 11,100 every day, quite a feat for a new track.

Innovation was at the forefront and from the outset Remington used a synthetic surface for its main track, a surface called Equitrack. The idea was that fast conditions would be in place for all races and for the track to handle all weathers; however it was actually the cruel Oklahoma sun which put paid to this experiment as the surface simply couldn’t hold up in the summer.

Pretty soon Remington ripped up the Equitrack surface and decided to use a more traditional dirt surface and since then it has been a great success.

Remington’s experiment seemed to make sure all-weather surfaces had finished in America before they started however upon the installation of Polytrack at Turfway Park it’s clear now this could be revisited.

Remington Park Track Details

The main track at Remington Park is a one-mile dirt oval, though they also have a seven furlong turf course laid to the inside.

Biggest Races

The spring meet for mixed breeds is highlighted by the $1,000,000 Heritage Place Futurity in May while the fall meet’s main event for thoroughbreds is the $400,000 Oklahoma Derby.
