About Rosecroft

Rosecroft Raceway hosts harness racing in Fort Washington, Maryland, and has done since its inception back in 1949.

The track was entrusted with part of the Breeders Crown from 1984 to 1988 and from 1990 to 1995 it hosted the Messenger Stakes which is the middle leg of the Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers.

Rosecroft sits only a half-hour drive from Washington DC and, given its position right on the I-495, is often referred to as the Raceway by the Beltway.

As well as its live racing meets Rosecroft is open to the public for simulcast racing meaning that bettors can enjoy the facilities and wager on races from around North America each day. Over 8,000 racing fans can be seated at the facility and there is room for just under 6,000 cars too.

Rosecroft History

Plans were afoot in 1947 to have a harness racetrack in Maryland and, after some negotiation; Rosecroft was chosen as the preferred site.

Horsebreeder William E. Miller founded Rosecroft Raceway in 1949 with the opening night (May 27th) being attended by over 6,000 people and attracting wagers totalling more than $160,000.

Rosecroft, owned by jockeys, trainers and breeders, was renowned for luxury with every aspect of it pure class and the facility costing over $800,000 to build ($8.4million in 2018 money).

Crowds began to grow at the popular venue and in 1953 the track hosted a total of 192,585 for the year – the biggest attendance of any harness track in the state. Horsemen from across the States moved to Maryland in the 50’s in order to be able to compete at Rosecroft against the best horses in the business.

Rosecroft started hosting the annual yearling Standardbred horse sales as well as the yearly Maryland Sire Stakes Races, initiatives intended to promote Maryland-bred horses.

Since the death of the track’s founder it has changed hands on a number of occasions and it currently owned by the Stronach Group (since 2016), having been in the hands of Mark Vogel, Weisman’s Colt Enterprises, Cloverleaf Enterprises and Penn National Gaming from 1987 onwards.
