Racing at Turf Paradise

About Turf Paradise

Turf Paradise is a versatile race track positioned in the Deer Valley area of Phoenix, Arizona. The track is known for both thoroughbred and quarter horse racing but for the last few years has also hosted motorcycle racing during the off-season.

The track is open on live racing ‘dark days’ for simulcast racing meaning bettors can attend and wager on races from tracks all around North America and beyond.

Being situated right in Phoenix around 20 minutes from the downtown area, the track is capable of drawing good size crowds on live race days.

Turf Paradise History

The area surrounding this track was once barren desert land, however racehorse owner and local businessman Walter Cluer had always dreamed of having a top class race track in Phoenix and so in 1954 he set about making that happen.

Turf Paradise’s doors opened to the public in 1956 to some acclaim and the architect of its success, Cluer, remained chief of the operation until 1980 when new owners took the reins and began to expand and modernize. Despite the name of the facility, it was only at this point that the turf course was laid to the inside the original dirt track.

The track’s third owner, Robert Walker, introduced off-track betting in 1989 and this meant more significant growth until in 1994 it was sold on and continued to go from strength to strength.

When the track was sold once more in the year 2000, it was by now worth a cool $53million with new owner Jerry Simms also putting his hand in his pocket to the tune of $5million to renovate the clubhouse and other facilities as well as adding race book style betting carrels, a new equine pool and improvements to the tracks themselves.

Field sizes began to increase, as did the track’s record for equine health, while Simms bought up more property around the facility. He also introduced motorcycle racing at the track during the racing off-season in 2016 meaning more use and more revenue for Turf Paradise.

Turf Paradise Track Details

Despite the name there is in fact a main dirt track here; a standard one-mile oval. The turf track sits inside the main track and is seven furlongs in length.

Biggest Races

By far the biggest draw here during the season is the Turf Paradise Derby, an 8½ furlong thoroughbred race for three-year-olds worth $75,000 run in early to mid-February.
