  • Distance: 1½ miles

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 3-year-old+

This $4 million race is often kind to European runners: in the last ten years, only two horses based in North America have won the race: Main Sequence (2014) and Bricks and Mortar (2019). So, when handicapping this race, take the time to get to know the international shippers!

While America always sends their very best up against the second flight of Europeans, they still find it difficult to beat them. Aidan O’Brien has been particularly successful; he has won this race six times, more than any other trainer. Keep an eye on Charlie Appleby, too; he has been excellent with his shippers, particularly in recent years, and won in 2021 with Yibir and in 2022 with Rebel’s Romance.

Horses drawn outside of him will shift inward one gate, though they will retain the same betting numbers as on draw day, and for wagering convenience, those numbers are reflected here.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf Contenders

These horses are among the leading contenders for the Breeders’ Cup:

Auguste Rodin - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Deep Impact

The $4 million question is which Auguste Rodin shows up. If it’s the same version who won the Epsom Derby (G1), Irish Derby (G1), and Irish Champion (G1), this likely favorite should finish well and run to the money. If it’s the one who showed up in the 2000 Guineas (G1) or the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1), maybe not. The key may be in the ground, though: he thrives on good going as opposed to soft, so if that translates to California firm, he should be in business.

King of Steel - Trainer: Roger Varian - Sire: Wootton Bassett

He comes back quickly, two weeks after a victory over soft going in the British Champion (G1) at Ascot, in which Frankie Dettori kicked him home with a smart rally. Dettori returns to the irons for this. He stretches out to a mile and a half, a distance at which he has done well: he won the King Edward VII (G2) at Royal Ascot and finished only ½ length second to Auguste Rodin in the Derby over that trip. But, is this one race too many after the Champion?

Mostahdaf - Trainer: John Gosden - Sire: Frankel

He wired the Juddmonte International last out, but was able to really from the rear in the Prince of Wales’s (G1) at Royal Ascot two back. That versatility should serve him well. However, as the favorite, it is worth asking the distance question. His best form comes at or about 1 ¼ miles, not 1 ½. The mile and a half at Santa Anita might play quicker than that distance in Europe, but it remains a question he will need to answer, and he won’t be the right price.

Onesto - Trainer: Fabrice Chappet - Sire: Frankel

Horses who finish underneath in the Arc tend to translate their class well to the Breeders’ Cup Turf, and with so much talk around Auguste Rodin and King of Steel, Onesto is flying under the radar. The major question is how well he handles the turf condition, as he has so many good races over softer going in France. However, he is well suited to the mile-and-a-half distance, and he had a bad trip when Auguste Rodin beat him two back in the Irish Champion.

Up to the Mark - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Not This Time

The breakout American turf horse this year, Up to the Mark had options when he nosed out Woodbine Mile (G1) winner Master of the Seas (G1) in the Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland. But, his even more brilliant efforts came over nine and ten furlongs earlier in the year. They were good enough to suggest the step up in trip may suit him. He drew well, he should be able to rate and rally, and he is the best hope North America has had in this race since Bricks and Mortar, another up-and-comer who galvanized his status on Championship Saturday.

War Like Goddess - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: English Channel

After finishing third behind Rebel’s Romance last year, it looked like this six-year-old mare may have lost a step. However, she was all business in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (G1) at Aqueduct a month back, reeling in a loose-on-the-lead rabbit and winning by open length over a quality horse in Soldier Rising. The California going may be a little firmer than she likes, but if any pace happens, this reliable filly could run late for another piece.
