One mile is an excellent test for a horse, as it requires the sort of balance of speed and stamina that many breeders are looking for in a sire. Its recent winners have been some of its best yet: 2018 winner City of Light went on to win the Pegasus World Cup, 2020 winner Knicks Go went on to win the Pegasus and the Breeders’ Cup Classic the next year, and 2021 winner Life Is Good was one of the best handicap horses of 2022, too.

Cody’s Wish, the popular winner of the 2022 edition of this race, comes back for an equally popular title defense. He headlines the 2023 renewal at Keeneland after a campaign that reiterated that even though he may not be a Breeders’ Cup Classic contender, he is a top-notch miler. Even so, the path to the first repeat since Goldencents in 2013 and 2014.

The 2023 edition at Santa Anita features an intriguing mix of horses who are stepping up from sprints as well as those cutting back from longer distance, so it should be a fascinating battle of racing styles, as they tackle the two-turn mile.

Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Bets

Year in and year out, the Dirt Mile is a special handicapping puzzle full of stretch-out sprinters, turn-back routers, and true milers. Bettors must decide whether those used to battling it out over 1¼ miles will stay on past tiring horses in the stretch or whether around the Keeneland bends those coming hard out of the gate and who are all speed will burn the opposition off.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile 2023 Odds

The field for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile was drawn Monday, October 30, the same day as the rest of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The initial field featured nine horses, though as of Wednesday the field has been scratched down to seven after the tragic death of Practical Move after his Tuesday gallop, as well as a minor right-front foot issue that Algiers presented with after training Tuesday.

Horses will shift inward to take up the gates from the scratched horses, though their betting number will remain the same as from draw day, and those are presented here for wagering reference.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Contenders

These are the leading contenders for the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. When building straight and exotic tickets, they are good places to start.

Cody’s Wish - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: Curlin

He won this race last year, and in four starts since, his only loss was a 1 ⅛-mile try in the Whitney (G1) where he was well beaten by leading Breeders’ Cup Classic contender White Abarrio. He looked like the old Cody’s Wish again in the Vosburgh (G2) last out. His tendency to start slowly just might hurt him more here at Santa Anita than elsewhere, given how speed-friendly Santa Anita can play on big days, but he is the class of the field and perfect in seven dirt mile tries.

National Treasure - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Quality Road

He is more of a defensive use after the scratches. His form has been suspect in three starts since wiring the Preakness. But, he is drawn at the outside of a short field over a track that can play well for speed, meaning if he stays close to his morning line, he may actually be worth betting that he can get the right trip in the Dirt Mile.

Skippylongstocking - Trainer: Saffie Joseph, Jr. - Sire: Exaggerator

He cuts back to a flat mile after building a career going longer, and it’s the right call. He is in strong form: he wired the three-turn Charles Town Classic (G2) at 1 ⅛ miles last out, and rallied for second at a two-turn 1 ⅛ miles last out. His preferred race shape, forward but not need-the-lead, makes him an intriguing price chance in the Dirt Mile.

Stage Raider - Trainer: Cherie DeVaux - Sire: Pioneerof the Nile

This half-brother to Justify has won going as long as 1 ⅛ miles, but comes into the Dirt Mile off of a pair of good starts at a flat mile. He won a minor stakes at Ellis over the two-turn configuration, but chased home a length behind Zozos last out on the Ack Ack (G3). The switch to a two-turn configuration moves Zozos down and moves Stage Raider up, and the short field should make it easy for him to work a good stalking trip.
