2023 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

Updated November 1, 2023

  • Purse: $1,000,000

  • Distance: 7 furlongs

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 3-year-old+ fillies & mares

  • Post Time: 3:50 p.m. ET

Santa Anita will host the 17th edition of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on November 4, as part of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The seven-furlong Grade 1 event should be extremely competitive, since neither defending champion Ce Ce nor anyone else has been truly dominant in the older fillies’ and mares’ sprint division. This means the race should be an excellent handicapping challenge, and a chance for a great payoff.

Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Bets

Even for professionals, this race is a unique challenge to handicap. Open to fillies and mares aged three and up, it is called a “sprint” but is actually run over the somewhat in-between distance of seven furlongs. So, your filly will need speed, but she’ll also need to show the battling qualities necessary to get to the wire.

Keep that in mind when you check times, workouts, and when you read the racing form, but a great shortcut is to simply check back in with us here at TVG.

Our expert team is on hand to offer you their racing acumen as we get nearer to go-time in California. We have information on the best Breeders’ Cup contenders and much more besides to help you pick out your Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint bet.

2023 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint Contenders

These are the leading contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint:

Clearly Unhinged - Trainer: Michael McCarthy - Sire: Into Mischief

A later-blooming three-year-old for trainer Michael McCarthy, she went straight into the Santa Anita Oaks (G2) straight out of a sprint maiden win. She faltered, but has been sharp in three sprint starts since. Even though she has yet to win a stakes company, she overcame a rough trip in the seven-furlong Test (G1) to cross the finish just a head behind Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Pretty Mischievous. She may be better suited tracking just off the pace and not trying to be right up front like she was in the Chillingworth (G3) last out, but she has the talent and further upside to improve at a price.

Goodnight Olive - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Ghostzapper

She dominated the filly and mare sprint division last year, and has been one of the leaders this year. She lost to Matareya three back in the Derby City Distaff (G1), but she had a nightmare trip and nowhere to go in the entire stretch run. Her other defeat this year came behind Echo Zulu, who was unfortunately injured in the lead-up to the Breeders’ Cup. The rail draw is a concern for another tough trip, but if she can find room, she is the one to beat.

Kirstenbosch - Trainer: John Sadler - Sire: Midnight Lute

Her biggest problem is that she often breaks slowly. So, she will need the track not to be speed-biased and will need at least an okay start from a good middle gate. She has found a home in these extended sprint races out west, though, and given her strong recent six-and-a-half-furlong form and her useful two-turn form, she has every right to find seven panels her sweet spot at this point.

Matareya - Trainer: Brad Cox - Sire: Pioneerof the Nile

She would be a surprise on the win end, as her only victory this year came when Goodnight Olive was boxed in badly the entire length of the stretch. However, she is tractable, she has never finished out of the money at this seven-furlong trip, and she can bring her best game to different racetracks. Use her in exotic wagers.

Society - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Gun Runner

She is expected to be well bet; in fact, she was named the morning-line second favorite behind Goodnight Olive. However, she is a speed horse, and she does her best work when she can just cruise and clear late. With Eda and Yuugiri in the field, that is not likely to happen, and she looks like an underlay.
