  • Grade: 1

This classic race, the championship event for two-year-old colts and geldings, has been on the Breeders’ Cup schedule from the beginning back in 1984. It is one of the most important events of the entire Thoroughbred horse racing season.

Winners of the Breeders Cup Juvenile are often made the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, especially given that they finish the year as the champion juvenile and most likely earn the Eclipse Award. This is something that was backed up by the brilliant Nyquist when he did the Juvenile-Derby double in 2015/16, so whoever wins this event will be seen as a real superstar. Street Sense was the first to accomplish the double in 2006/2007.

Selecting Your FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Bets

Whatever they do or do not go on to achieve as three-year-olds, winners of the Breeders' Cup Cup Juvenile never come from low grade races to cause a shock.

Whoever wins this race will have to be a battle-hardened, Grade I winner despite their tender years and low mileage so when you’re checking out the form, but sure to think about that.

FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Contenders

These are the leading contenders for the 2023 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile:

Locked - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Gun Runner

Locked had some early trouble in his six-furlong start and only ran on for third, but has thrived with experience and distance. He broke his maiden after pressing the pace over a two-turn mile trip at Saratoga, and then rallied to win by half a length over a game The Wine Steward in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1). That stamina and versatility make him a major contender for Todd Pletcher.

Muth - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Good Magic

Off his decisive victory in the American Pharoah (G1), he is the leading contender for dominant Breeders’ Cup Juvenile trainer Bob Baffert. That American Pharoah came at the same course and distance as the Breeders’ Cup, and looking at that and his debut, he was impressively able to show sprint speed, but rate in a route. That suggests he is an intelligent, tractable, and classy horse.

Prince of Monaco - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Speightstown

Undefeated in three starts, Prince of Monaco was considered the possible leader of the juvenile division going into the Del Mar Futurity (G1) after his dominant victory over Muth in the Best Pal (G3). However, it took everything he had to hold off Mirahmadi by ¾ length in the Del Mar Futurity. Mirahmadi was still a maiden at the time, and he has not run back. Between that and the fact that he has yet to try two turns, he has a lot of questions to answer against his stablemate, who may have lapped him development-wise.

Timberlake - Trainer: Brad Cox - Sire: Into Mischief

He came up empty on debut after a slow start but has put up three better efforts since. That includes wins in a maiden race and the Champagne (G1), with a second-place run in the Hopeful (G1) between them. All of those outings have come over extended one-turn trips, meaning he has to answer the two-turn question. The Hopeful is also a question: even though it wasn’t bad, it was a regression, meaning he might be at the bad-race phase of a good race, bad race pattern.

The Wine Steward - Trainer: Mike Maker - Sire: Vino Rosso

Usually, a rail draw would mean game over, especially for a forward type, but The Wine Steward overcame a rail draw in the Breeders’ Futurity and was able to track a few lengths back, pounce, and dig in to finish a close second behind Locked. It was a good first two-turn try and a good step up from New York-bred company. That tactical speed should play well at Santa Anita, and jockey Luis Saez (who rode him in the Breeders’ Futurity) should be able to carve out a trip again.
