2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

Updated November 1, 2023

  • Purse: $1,000,000

  • Distance: 5½ furlongs

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 3-year-old+

  • Post Time: 7:25 p.m ET

As the Breeders’ Cup World Championships continue to grow steadily, this race is another example of how the Breeders’ Cup has helped build new, world-class racing divisions in the United States.

Turf sprinting has long been a prestige division in Australia, Hong Kong, and Europe, and the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint has both helped build a division in the United States and bring more truly world-class runners to the country. Only added to the schedule in 2008 and upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2012, it already feels like we couldn’t do without this event—with dual winners Mizdirection and Stormy Liberal having taken the racing public’s hearts. Especially in light of the addition of more graded races for turf sprinters, and the effort to build a juvenile turf sprint division that develops such runners, this is a division that is on the upswing.

Over the ultra-short five-furlong trip at Santa Anita, this race will be for the real speed demons and will be some sight to witness on Saturday, November 4.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint 2023 Odds

The field for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint was drawn on Monday, October 30, along with the rest of the races from the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The race drew an overflow field, as many horses as were allowed: twelve in the main field, plus four more also eligible horses who can draw in if others in the field scratch.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Contenders

These are the key contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Considering them is a good place to start when designing both straight and exotic tickets for the race.

Bradsell - Trainer: Archie Watson - Sire: Tasleet

He is likely to take a lot of money given his European form: he beat Highfield Princess in the King’s Stand (G1) at Royal Ascot and ran a good third to Live In the Dream in the Nunthorpe. However, he came up flat next out in the Flying Five (G1) at the Curragh, and he will have to work out a trip from a poor post buried down near the inside. He looks like an underlay.

Caravel - Trainer: Brad Cox - Sire: Mizzen Mast

This speedy mare shocked the world at 42-1 in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last year. She has been defeated in her last two starts heading into this race, though both happened over soft ground, and this will be over fast ground. The big concern that makes her an underlay is that she is accustomed to 5 ½ furlongs—and unproven at five, which is a whole new ballgame. She can be tactical, but will have to work a trip from near the inside. At her best, she has the quality, but there are many questions at short odds.

Live In the Dream - Trainer: Adam West - Sire: Prince of Lir

He surprised observers and punched his ticket to the Breeders’ Cup with a victory in the Nunthorpe (G1) on August 15, going the straight five furlongs at York. Trainer Adam West has been pointing him to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships ever since, prepping him in the Woodford (G2) at Keeneland. He flattened late in that 5 ½-furlong outing, but the turn back to five furlongs gives him every right to rebound.

Motorious - Trainer: Phil D’Amato - Sire: Muharrar

Speed tends to hold well in five-furlong races at Santa Anita. But, if things get fast enough to let the closers come in, Motorious should be finishing sharply. He earned his spot in this race in the Green Flash, a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series race, where he rallied to win by 1 ¾ lengths from off the pace. This is a tougher field, but he has never missed the board in five starts at the Santa Anita lawn, and he is a good, consistent local.

Nobals - Trainer: Larry Rivelli - Sire: Noble Mission

Jockey Gerardo Corrales got the biggest win of his career when he sent Nobals to the front in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint (G2) in May and led all the way. Expect him to do exactly that again here, and expect this Noble Mission gelding to thrive over this California-firm ground and lead them as long as he possibly can at a price.

Roses for Debra - Trainer: Christophe Clement - Sire: Liam’s Map

Toss the last; she was running over a yielding course at Parx. She should bounce back to her best form on the switch to firm ground. She looked great going a flat five furlongs at Pimlico in an allowance earlier in the year, and she is a better horse now than she was then.

Tony Ann - Trainer: Phil D’Amato - Sire: Cairo Prince

She just got up to beat Caravel in the Franklin (G2) at Keeneland last out, her highest-profile win yet. That ability to run on late is a positive, as is her local form. Better yet, she ran two good races at a flat five furlongs at Del Mar three and four back, and did so during her maiden days as well. She is a better horse now since the last time she tried it, and her one-turn, five-furlong experience may help her be a live price option.
