2024 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

Updated October 24, 2024

  • Purse: $1,000,000

  • Distance: 5 furlongs

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 3-year-old+

  • Post Time: Saturday, November 2 at 12:41 p.m. PDT (Race 5 at Del Mar)

As the Breeders’ Cup World Championships continue to grow steadily, this race is another example of how the Breeders’ Cup has helped build new, world-class racing divisions in the United States.

Turf sprinting has long been a prestige division in Australia, Hong Kong, and Europe, and the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint has both helped build a division in the United States and bring more truly world-class runners to the country. Only added to the schedule in 2008 and upgraded to Grade 1 status in 2012, it already feels like we couldn’t do without this event—with dual winners Mizdirection and Stormy Liberal having taken the racing public’s hearts. Especially in light of the addition of more graded races for turf sprinters, and the effort to build a juvenile turf sprint division that develops such runners, this is a division that is on the upswing.

The trip is a little longer at some other Breeders’ Cup Sites. But, over the ultra-short five furlongs at Del Mar Racetrack, this race will be for the real speed demons and will be some sight to witness on Saturday, November 2.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Contenders

These are the key contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Considering them is a good place to start when designing both straight and exotic tickets for the race.

Believing - Trainer: George Boughey - Sire: Mehmas

The Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint is a five-furlong dash this year, and Believing has been a consistent and classy presence in five-furlong dashes in Europe all season long. She won the Sapphire (G2) at the Curragh in July, ran fourth in both Group 1 turf sprints at Royal Ascot (including the five-furlong King Charles III), and has hit the board in top-level company in her last three starts. She may not get all the way there but expect her to finish strongly for a piece.

Big Evs - Trainer: Michael Appleby - Sire: Blue Point

He was a top-class turf sprinter among European juveniles last year, and ended his campaign with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. He has continued to be strong this year, with two wins in four starts, including a victory versus older in the Qatar (G2). He disappointed in the Nunthorpe (G1) last out, but he bounced back from a flop in the Nunthorpe last year as well, and his previous win in California merits respect.

Bradsell - Trainer: Archie Watson - Sire: Tasleet

He hasn’t run a clunker in four starts this year, including two top-level wins in the Nunthorpe and Flying Five, and a solid second in the Prix de l’Abbaye (G1) last out behind the consistent Makarova. It’s his first ship outside of Europe, but he is a pace-versatile five-furlong specialist with the class to hold up to anyone in this field.

Cogburn - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Not This Time

Perfect in three starts this year, he has been the force of the American turf sprint division, including a sub-minute 5 ½ furlongs in the Jaipur (G1) this year. His best weapon this year has been his speed, but on the cutback to a flat five furlongs he may need to come from off the pace. The good news is, he has won twice at this distance from off the pace, so if he can do that against better horses, he will contend.

Motorious - Trainer: Phil D’Amato - Sire: Muhaarar

This pace-versatile West Coast turf sprint fixture has class to prove. However, he rallied for a close fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint last year at Santa Anita, and he is perhaps even better at Del Mar, undefeated in three starts over the course. That includes victories in the Green Flash (G3) the last two years, over the same course and distance as the Breeders’ Cup.

Star of Mystery - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: Kodiac

She is a sophomore filly facing males, but that’s no challenge given her schedule this year. She was repeatedly in the mix with older male turf sprinters in the series of stakes in Dubai, she won the Quick Call (G3) against sophomore males, and she hit the board in both the Jaipur (G1) and Franklin (G2) versus older. She is a late runner, so the more early speed the better, but she reliably fires and she did get the job done at a flat five furlongs in a Group 2 in Dubai this year.
